This Irish-language biographies project is being developed by Gaois, Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge, DCU, since 2009, in collaboration with:

  • Cló Iar-Chonnacht
  • the panel of joint editors
  • Diarmuid Breathnach and Máire Ní Mhurchú, authors of the Beathaisnéis series, which was published in nine volumes by An Clóchomhar (1986–2007)

The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media funded the digitisation of the material and the development of ainm.ie during the period 2009–2013, and since 2014 funds hosting and technical maintenance of the site by Gaois, Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge.

DIARMUID BREATHNACH

Born in Kiltimon, Co. Wicklow on 5 August 1930. Primary education (Bray), second level education (Christian Brothers in Áras Brianach and in Dún Laoghaire). Started librarianship (The Library Council, Bray; Co. Kilkenny; RTÉ). FLAI (The Library Association of Ireland). Honorary Doctorate 2002 (National University of Ireland). Publications: Almanag Éireannach (1981); Almanag Éireannach 2 (2001); Beathaisnéis 1-9 (1986–2007) (in partnership with Máire Ní Mhurchú); Titim agus Éirí (2013). Translation: Lámhleabhar Ginearálta don Cheoltóir (1973) with Sr. Cecily OP.

MÁIRE NÍ MHURCHÚ

Born in Stoneen, Co. Kilkenny on 4 August 1932. Primary education (Mungmacody and Thomastown), second level education (Coláiste na Toirbhearta, Mountmellick, Co. Laois). Employed in the Civil Service and then in RTÉ. Qualified librarian (FLAI The Library Association of Ireland). Honorary Doctorate 2002 (National University of Ireland). Publications: Beathaisnéis 1-9 (1986–2007) (in partnership with Diarmuid Breathnach).

Joint editors

A panel of joint editors was established in January 2013 to write new biographies and to provide information regarding biographies to be updated. Below is a list of the current members.

LILLIS Ó LAOIRE

PROFESSOR LILLIS Ó LAOIRE (NUIG)

Lillis Ó Laoire was born and reared in the Donegal Gaeltacht. He taught for many years at the University of Limerick and is now a lecturer in Irish and Folklore at National University of Ireland, Galway.

MÁRTAN Ó CIARDHA

MÁRTAN Ó CIARDHA (JOURNALIST/BROADCASTER)

Mártan Ó Ciardha is a journalist who was educated at National University of Ireland, Galway, St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam and Scoil Shailearna, Na hAille. He spent over 30 years working for RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. He has also worked for TG4, RTÉ and for the print media in both Irish and English.

ÉILIS NÍ ANLUAIN

ÉILIS NÍ ANLUAIN (WRITER)

Éilis Ní Anluain has worked as a researcher in RTÉ and as a secondary school teacher. She is a columnist with The Irish Times since 2004, editor of Aghaidheanna Fidil agus Púiciní (2009) with Muiris Mac Conghail, and Creidim Fós (2013) with Eoghan Ó hAnluain, and author of the novel Filleann Seoirse (2011).

SEÁN MAC LABHRAÍ

SEÁN MAC LABHRAÍ (FORMER LECTURER AT ST MARY’S UNIVERSITY COLLEGE BELFAST)

B.A. in Irish Studies from the University of Ulster (1981) and an M.A. in Irish literature under the direction of Breandán Ó Buachalla in UCD (1987). Seán has a particular interest in contemporary modern literature and in 18th Century Irish literature. Editor of An áit a n-ólann an t-uan an bainne (2008) and Anam na teanga (2012). Articles published in Seanchas Ard Mhacha, Taighde agus Teagasc, Éigse Loch Lao, Clogher Record and Donegal Annual. He has done pieces for TV and for radio with the BBC such as Ar mo bhealach féin, a programme about Seosamh Mac Grianna’s trip around Wales in 1934. He is on the committee of An Cumann Scoildrámaíochta.

Professor Regina Uí Chollatáin (UCD) and Professor Fionntán de Brún (NUIM) were joint editors from 2013 to 2016. Certain biographies were written by other authors and these are credited at the end of the biography.
