Ba é an sagart seo a thug amach eagrán 1822 de An Teagasg Críosduidhe do réir ceasda agus freagartha le Andrew Donlevy ar foilsíodh a chéaduair i bPáras é i 1742. Éadbhard Ó Raghallaigh a cheartaigh don chlódóir é. Deir MacEncroe sa réamhrá: ‘The Irish language is venerable for its antiquity, and valuable for the many literary documents it contains; in harmony of sound it is inferior to no language, to many it is superior in strength of expression. Laudable and effective efforts have been made of late to restore the Irish to its antient degree on the scale of learned languages.’ Sa 3ú heagrán in 1848 dúradh: ‘In that year [1822] the Reverend Dr John MacEncroe, now the Venerable Dean of Sydney, published in Dublin the second edition of this Catechism which he had begun to prepare for the press while a student in Maynooth about three years before. It was at a later period of the same year that the Reverend D. O’Sullivan [Domhnall Ó Súilliobháin], also a student of Maynooth at that very time, brought out his Irish translation of the Imitation of Christ. The College of St Patrick encouraged both those publications engaging two hundred copies of one and three hundred copies of the other. This third edition retains none of the numerous changes which Dr McEncroe thought proper to introduce into the work, the condensation of the preface excepted.’

In aice le Caiseal, Co. Thiobraid Árann, an 26 Nollaig 1795 a rugadh John McEncroe; Crowe an leagan den sloinne seo is coitianta inniu sa cheantar sin. Oirníodh i gColáiste Phádraig, Maigh Nuad, é in 1819. Chaith sé tamall ag múineadh i gcliarscoil deoise na Mí. As sin chuaigh sé go Charleston sna Stáit Aontaithe agus chaith seacht mbliana ann ina bhiocáire ginearálta ag an Easpag cailiúil, John England (1786-1842). D’fhill sé ar Éirinn nuair a theip ar a shláinte. Tairgeadh easpagóideacht dó sna Stáit ach b’fhearr leis dul go dtí an Astráil. Ba é J.H. Plunkett as Co. Ros Comáin, Ard-Aighne New South Wales, a d’fhéach chuige go raibh post séiplínigh le fáil aige. I Sydney a bhí sé lonnaithe. Ní raibh aon easpag san Astráil mar gur chuid de dheoise Mauritius é. Mhol Mac Encroe go láidir don Róimh go mbeadh easpagóideacht ann agus deirtear san iontráil in Australian Encyclopaedia, 1958 gurb é áitiú láidir MacEncroe ba mhó ba chúis leis an Róimh ceann a bhunú. Chaith sé na blianta 1839-41 ar Oileán Norfolk agus thóg sé an chéad eaglais Chaitliceach ann. Bhunaigh sé an nuachtán Freeman’s Journal agus bhí sé gníomhach ag eagrú scoileanna. Thug sé cuairt ar an Róimh agus ar Éirinn in 1858-9 agus rinne a dhícheall sagairt Éireannacha a thabhairt go Sydney. I ndeireadh a shaoil bhí sé i bparóiste Naomh Pádraig sa chathair. D’éag sé ar 22 Lúnasa 1868.
