Phases of work

Phase 1 (2009–2011)

The objective of phase 1 was to make this store of knowledge easily accessible through digitization of the original material and its publication on line. Other search and browsing facilities have been made available that allow the user to explore this comprehensive resource in new and varied ways.

The following is a list of the main tasks completed:

  1. All volumes were scanned and converted to textual format.
  2. The digitized versions were proofed.
  3. A temporary database was created to store the newly-written biographies in simple text format and was made available on line on 22 March, 2010. Photographs received from relatives and friends of those featured were added to some of the biographies.
  4. An editorial interface and new Web site were created to store all the biographies and extra facilities for search and browsing were added to the database/Web site. The new site was launched to the public on 1 November, 2011.
  5. 532 biographies were updated with corrections and new information.
  6. 50 newly-written and previously unpublished biographies were made available.
  7. All biographies were edited or modified for publication.
  8. Names of people, places, works, and various elements relating to Conradh na Gaeilge and educational institutions were tagged.
  9. An information box was added beside each biography which includes the following details (if known): other name, gender, school, details of higher education and birthplace.
  10. Other information resources were added to the site.
  11. A complete list of biographies (old and new) was made available on the site along with an interview with the authors (two sound-files).

Phase 2 (2012-2013)

A programme of work was planned (i) for the maintenance and further development of the on- line resource; (ii) to ensure the continuation of Irish-language biography studies and (iii) to make appropriate arrangements for the publication of material on a continuing basis.

  1. A Steering committee was established and a methodology developed for writing and updating biographies.
  2. A panel of joint editors was established in January 2013 to write new biographies and to provide Fiontar with information regarding biographies to be updated.
  3. 24 newly-written and previously unpublished biographies were added to the site.
  4. 47 biographies were updated with corrections and new information from the original authors, the joint editors and the public.
  5. An information box was added to each biography and the occupations of all the biographical subjects were added to this information box.
  6. Townland names were manually tagged in 562 biographies and foreign placenames were automatically tagged.
  7. Political parties mentioned in the biographies were tagged.

Current work (2014–2018)

Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge is currently responsible for hosting the website, for correspondence with the public, and for technical developments. New biographies are drafted and submitted to Cló Iar-Chonnacht by the panel of joint editors. Existing biographies are updated from time to time, as new evidence and information emerges. This new content is published by Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge on ainm.ie upon receipt from Cló Iar-Chonnacht.
