Biographies

This collection of biographies, comprising 1,715 biographies from 1560 to the present day, is an extensive and valuable academic work. The people featured in the biographies hail from every corner of the country and were active in a wide range of fields. While the Irish language is the common thread, the entire narrative is extensive and will be of great interest to historians, local communities, the families of the people featured, Irish-language academics and the Irish diaspora.

Updated material: The original biographies are updated as new information emerges.

New material: Between 2010 and 2016 88 new and previously unpublished biographies were added to the site. Most of these biographies are of people who have died between 2007 and 2015, although there are a few newly-written accounts of earlier lives. Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge prepared the material for publication on line. Diarmuid Breathnach and Máire Ní Mhurchú, the original authors of the series, wrote most of the new biographies published on the site between 2010 and 2012. A panel of joint editors was established in January 2013 to write new biographies and to inform Cló Iar-Chonnacht of biographies that need to be updated. New biographies are added to the site as they are made available. Dr Fionntán de Brún, Dr Lillis Ó Laoire, Mártan Ó Ciardha and Éilis Ní Anluain are the current members of the editorial panel.

Note regarding the reference lists: A list of references has been added to each of the newly-written biographies. The works referenced in the biography are listed but those works written by the subject of the biography are not listed whether these are fiction or works of research.

Note regarding photographs published on the site: Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge acknowledges its gratitude to everyone who provided photographs and gave permission for their publication.
